On December 1, 2009, the New York Power Authority (NYPA) called for proposals to develop the first fresh water wind energy initiative in the nation. Among the prime areas targeted for development is the eastern shore of Lake Ontario, roughly from Oswego to Cape Vincent. Parts of Lake Erie and southern Lake Ontario are also potential sites. NYPA has asked developers to submit proposals by June 1 and plans to award contracts by the end of 2010. The targeted commercial operation date has been set for 2015.
